The Department of Animal Science formally known as the Department of Animal Science and Fisheries came to being alongside with other Departments during the establishment of the College of Agriculture in the year 2007. This Department opened its door to commence academic activities as well as admit its first set of undergraduate students in 2007/2008 academic session on Wednesday 8th October 2008, and graduated them in 2011/2012 academic session on 27th June, 2012.The department of Animal Science since its inception has continued to offer courses without any disruption of academic session.
Livestock production is ever dynamic due to dynamism in the human population and demand pattern for livestock and its product. These shifts bring about changes in production systems. In the last decades, new technologies, innovation, emphasis and challenges to livestock production have emerged. Of necessity, new ways have to be found to make room for the adoption of these new technologies, embrace the new emphases and have to proffer solution to the new challenges. Pursuant to these therefore, and in line with the vision and mission of this University, the Department of Animal Science propose a research agenda to be put forward for consideration as part of the Postgraduate programmes of the University.

Department of Animal Science is among the seven departments floated by the College of Agriculture in the Faculty of Agricultural Production and Management, which is located in Ejigbo. The town is located along the border between Oyo and Osun State. The faculty is currently having four (4) Departments with students admitted into their programmes.

Vision of the Department:
Our vision is to graduate excellent students that can contribute to the development of livestock industry, ensure the sustenance of livestock product and by-product for human and provision of affordable animal protein.
Mission of the Department:
Our mission is to be an exemplary department of excellent providing high quality teaching, learning and research experience, this will lead the production of employable graduate, entrepreneurs, scholars, researchers and professionals in the field of livestock production and managements, and animal health management that will be capable of having impact on their environment while being globally competitive.
Research Activities:
The Department research activist is centred on basic and applied research in general Animal science, Animal Nutrition, Animal Physiology, Animal Breeding and Genetics, Nutritional Biochemistry, Livestock Production and Management, Animal Health Management and so on
Research facilities being developed include:
- Teaching and research farm – 2000 broiler capacity pen, herds of cattle, 3000 layers capacity pen, breeding and production pen for sheep and goat, pig and rabbit

The Department of Agronomy conducts basic, applied and adaptive research on the management of tropical soils, technology of seed production, and all aspects of horticulture. The department is aimed at training high level manpower for the Universities and Research Institutes, and provides human development capabilities for the general Nigerian economy.
Location:
The Department of Agronomy is one of the departments under College of Agriculture in Ejigbo. The town is located along the border between Oyo and Osun State. The Department of Agronomy has teaching and non-teaching scientists who are versatile to produce high level of agricultural graduate with broad based advanced-knowledge in soil management, crop production, agricultural mechanization, land resources management, and environmental protection. She also trains professional agronomists for both private and public sectors of the economy.

Mission of the Department:
To produce graduates that are technologically and professionally sound, committed to the pursuit of academic innovation and skill-based training in Agronomy and set the pace and tradition of excellence in teaching, research and community service and provide food security to the world at large.
Physical development:
The department has functional Screen House, Garri Processing Unit, Oil Palm Plantation, oil palm processing units, pineapple plantation, post-harvest/value addition laboratory, Tractors with Implement, Power Tiller, Tractor Shed, Teaching and Research Farm, Reading Room for undergraduate and Postgraduate Students, Departmental Library. Department has well-equipped functioning laboratories that serve the academic units of the Department. The laboratory is well-equipped to cope with the teaching of students and academic staff for research purposes. Well-illuminated and ventilated classrooms and seminar rooms are also available for students’ use in the Department. Nursery unit (for raising seedlings of permanent crop as well as ornamental crop for practical purposes and for community services). Weather Station and Perimeter fencing for border demarcation are in the pipeline.
Research Activities:
Basic and applied research in agronomy is embarked upon by members of academic staff in the department. Areas of research coverage: • Soil Science, • Natural Resources Management, • Crop Production, Crop Physiology, • Plant Breeding and molecular Genetics, • Seed Science, • Crop Protection, • Horticulture. Research facilities being developed include: Teaching and research farm; Teaching and research laboratory; Screen house; Nursery; Information and communication technology (ICT); and Departmental libraries.
Grants and Awards:
- Field evaluation of sweet potato germplasm for dual purpose in Osun State University
- Partial rhizosphere drying and regulated irrigation effects on photosynthesis and the concentration of bioactive compounds in green amaranth (Amanrathus cruentus L.)
- Nutrition and health implications of processed insects as protein supplements in the diets of Clariuas gariepinus and Heterobranchus bidorsalis
Community Empowerment Service Project:
The department establish centers and project for community empowerment. These are:
- centre for research demonstration The centre packages and disseminate research findings as well and improved seedlings for adaptation trials as well adoption by the people.
- sparri and garri processing outreach Establish to promote sparri (garri production from sweet potato) and garri from cassava production enterprises by interested individuals.
- Oil palm production outreach Establish to promote hygienic oil palm production enterprises by interested individuals and sale to the community at reduced prices

I welcome you warmly, to the Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, one of the core Departments at the Faculty of Agricultural Production and Management of College of Agriculture of Osun State University, Osogbo, Osun State, Nigeria.
No doubt, agricultural extension experts are change agents and change they say, is the only permanent thing in life. And so, I implore you all to keep evolving to radiate desirable change(s) always as your best is surely yet to come. However, please endeavour to have positive disposition about life, at all times.
Location:
The Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, a product of the bifurcation of the defunct Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension, is housed by the College of Agriculture, Ejigbo Campus of Osun State University. The ancient town of Ejigbo, Osun State shares border with Oyo State. The people of Ejigbo having an elite king are quite accommodating and receptive and so the indigenes pose little or no threat to the peaceful and fruitful stay of our students on and off campus, all through and even beyond the length of their study time.
Academic Programmes:
The Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development offers academic programmes at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Our undergraduate programme leads to the award of Bachelor of Agriculture (B. Agric.) Degree in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development while we run postgraduate degree programmes at the following levels:
- Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development;
- Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development;
- Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development.

Philosophy of the Department:
The Philosophy of the Department is to produce thoroughly bred, skilful and self-reliant graduate and postgraduate change agents who are highly relevant to nation building particularly in the agricultural development sphere at the national and international levels. The Department is also committed to the achievement of the two foremost sustainable development goals of No poverty and Zero Hunger, hence we are engaged in quality agricultural extension and advisory outreach services targeted towards boosting the productive capabilities of local farmers across the three agricultural zones in Osun State and beyond. We are equally open to public private collaborations geared towards improving the livelihoods of resource-poor farm families within and outside Osun State, our primary environment.
Physical Facilities and Development:
The Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development can boast of the following functional physical facilities:
- a standard well-equipped and decent Departmental office
- a communication studio for agricultural journalism and;
- a well- stocked home economics laboratory
In the near future and in preparation towards having a full-fledged proposed Department of Livelihood and Consumer Sciences as an offshoot of the Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, we are working towards having other complementary home science facilities including:
- a caregiver centre (creche) for minding toddler children of staff and/or some married students on campus
- a recreation centre for indoor games like Ludo game, Ayo Olopon, Scrabble, Monopoly etc.
- Apparel laboratory for sewing and other relayed practical works, among other facilities
Research Activities
Members of academic staff in the Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development are constantly engaged in impactful basic and applied research across different aspects of agricultural production with the ultimate aim of improving the living standards of the farming folks.

Two medical students from the College of Health Sciences at Osun State University have been awarded a scholarship totalling nine hundred and forty thousand, eight hundred and twelve naira (N940,812) by the West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo). This recognition is part of the company's annual scholarship award scheme for the 2023/2024 academic session.

FUNCTIONS OF THE COUNCIL
The University Council shall have the power and overall responsibility to:
(a) Make statutes for the organisation, policy, structure, powers, development, financing, responsibilities and general management of the university.
(b) Acquire landed and other forms of property for the use of the university.
(c) Control and superintend the affairs of the university.
(d) Determine the procedure for financing the university.
(e) Determine the terms and conditions of appointment of the Vice Chancellor; and other staff of the university.
(f) Appoint, promote and discipline the staff of the university on the advice of appropriate committees.
(g) Consider and approve annual budgets, short-term, medium- and long-term development proposals of the university.
(h) Consider and approve the annual report.
(i) Consider and approve Auditors’ reports at the end of each academic year.
(j) Conduct a visitation to the university at least once in every five years when new colleges/departments/programmes will come in.
MAJOR COMMITTEES OF COUNCIL
The Council normally operates through the committee system. The following shall be the main Committees of Council:
i. Finance and General Purposes Committee
ii. Appointments and Promotions Committee
iii. Tenders Board
vii. Academic Development Committee
Other committees may be established as the Council may deem fit.
The Council shall therefore carry out its functions through the following major committees:
(i) Finance and General Purposes Committee
The functions of the Finance and General Purposes Committee shall be the scrutiny of the university’s budget and other financial transactions before they are presented to the Governing Council. The Chairman of Council shall also be the Chairman of the Finance and General Purposes Committee while the other members will be the Vice-Chancellor and five representatives of the Council.
(ii) The Tenders Committee
The main function of the Tenders Committee shall be the consideration of tenders submitted by contractors wishing to execute all major projects of the University. The Chairman of Council shall also be Chairman of the Tenders Committee. Other members will include the Vice-Chancellor, four other Council members, four representatives of Senate, one representative of the Committee of Provosts, Directors and Deans and the Registrar.
(iii) Appointments and Promotions Committee
The Appointments and Promotions Committee shall deal with the issues of the interview and appointment of staff of the University and present these to the Governing Council for its consideration. The Appointments and Promotions Committee will also consider staff of the University for confirmation of appointment and promotion. The Vice-Chancellor shall be the Chairman of the Appointments and Promotions Committee. Other members of the Committee will include the Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Registrar, Bursar, Librarian, Provosts of Colleges/Deans of Faculties, two representatives of Senate, Head of the Department concerned, if not already a member, and five other Council members.
(iv) The Fundraising Committee
The main function of the Fundraising Committee shall be to undertake fund-raising activities for the University. Although the Chairman of the Fund-Raising Committee shall be the Vice-Chancellor, the Chairman of Council shall render support as may be required from time to time. Other members of the Committee are three representatives of Council, three representatives of Senate, three representatives of Alumni Associations, the Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Registrar, Bursar and Librarian.
(v) Disciplinary Committee
The terms of reference of the Disciplinary Committee shall be:
(1) To investigate, consider and determine all disciplinary cases involving senior members of staff of the University except the Vice-Chancellor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellors or any other member of staff as the Council may direct, provided always that any member of staff aggrieved by a decision of the Committee may appeal to Council for reconsideration within twenty-one days of the decision of the Committee;
(2) To make recommendations to Council on any other matter that will be in the interest of proper discipline of members of staff of the University; and
(3) To report to Council from time to time.
(vi) Academic Development Committee
The Academic Development Committee will receive and consider submissions from the Senate on all issues relating to academic development in the University including establishment of new academic programmes and units. The Committee will also advise Council on matters connected to academic development of the University in addition to reporting to Council from time to time.
