BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Arts and Social Science Education was one of the two Departments in the College of Education of Osun State University. The Department was established at the inception of the University on September 21, 2007. The Department offers three degree programmes, namely; B. Ed. Economics, B. Ed. English and B. Ed. Political Science.

The Department took off with six academic staff who are specialists in Arts and Social Science Education. These are supported by a number of Adjunct/Visiting Lecturers drawn from other relevant Departments in the University or from other Universities. 

The Department has a Departmental Secretary and an Office Assistant. The Lecture rooms used by the Department are shared with the other Departments in the College. The students registered in the Department offer Education courses at the 100 level but start to offer courses in their chosen disciplines from the 200 level. At the 400 level, all students in the Department are required to return back to the College and offer Education courses.

The three programmes of the Department operate academic curricular that are tailored along the stipulations contained in the National Universities Commission (NUC) Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards.

PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES
The philosophy and objectives of the B.Ed. Degree programmes in the Department are as follows:

Education Economics
Philosophy
The B. Sc. (Ed) Economics Programme is being undertaken to produce the right caliber of committed professionals in the area of Education Economics in the right quality and quantity in order to meet the national needs and contribute to the achievement of the national goals on education particularly at the secondary school level. Teacher trainees at the end of programme should be capable of effectively teaching all components of Economics in the secondary, as the programme aims at providing prospective teachers with solid background knowledge in the subject. To this end, the programme is set to achieve the following objectives.
Objectives
The specific objectives of the programme are to:
(i) Identify models that identify the essence of a problem, analyse and reason
both deductively and inductively;
(ii) Provide training in the principles of economics and their application
appropriate to the type of degree concerned-single, joint and combine
studies;
(iii) Stimulate students intellectually through the study of economics and to lead
them to appreciate its application to a range of problems and its relevance in
a variety of contexts;
(iv) Provide a firm foundation of knowledge in a range of settings.
(v) Develop in students the ability to apply the analytical tools, knowledge and
skills acquired to the solution of societies economic problems;
(vi) Equip students with appropriate tools of analysis to tackle issues and
problems of economic policy;
(vi) Develop in students a range of transferable skills that will be of value in
employment and self-employment;
(vii) Provide students with analytical skills and the ability to develop simplified
frame works for studying the real world;
(viii) Provide students with the knowledge and skill base, from which they can
proceed to further studies in Economics, related areas or interdisciplinary
areas that involve economics;
(ix) Generate in students an appreciation of the economic dimensions of wider
social and political issues;
(x) To provide a broad the general background knowledge that would facilitate
the acquisition of specialized competencies in Economics Education;
(xi) To give specialist training to teacher trainees in Economics Education
(xii) To equip teacher trainees with requisites skills needed to teach economics
effectively in the secondary schools;
(xiii) To acquaint students with basic techniques of research in Education as
professional course.

The aims of the course include contributing to the achievement of the goals of the Faculty and equipping undergraduate students with the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes for delivering effective Government, Civic and Citizen Education lessons in the secondary school.

Education English
Philosophy
The B.A. (Ed) English Programme is being undertaken to produce the right caliber of committed professionals in the area of Education English in the right quality and quantity in order to meet the national needs and contribute to the achievement of the national goals on education particularly at the secondary school level. Teacher trainees at the end of programme should be capable of effectively teaching all components of English in the secondary, as the programme aims at providing prospective teachers with solid background knowledge in the subject. To this end, the programme is set to achieve the following objectives.
Objectives
The objectives of this programme are to:
(i) inculcate the basic skills in the study of oral and written language and literature;
(ii) acquaint students with the basic structures of English Language sentences, clause and phase;
(iii) inculcate proficiency in the use of English Language for communicative purposes;
(iv) expose students to basic genres of literature within and outside Nigeria (i.e. Prose, Poetry and Drama).
(v) prepare students for the teaching of language and Literature in Nigerian school system.


Education Political Science
Philosophy
The B. Sc. (Ed) Political Science Programme is being undertaken to produce the right caliber of committed professionals in the area of Education Political Science in the right quality and quantity in order to meet the national needs and contribute to the achievement of the national goals on education particularly at the secondary school level. Teacher trainees at the end of programme should be capable of effectively teaching all components of Political Science in the secondary, as the programme aims at providing prospective teachers with solid background knowledge in the subject. To this end, the programme is set to achieve the following objectives.
Objectives
The main objectives of a degree in Education Political Science are to:
(i) provide training in the principles of Political Science and their application to the classroom practice;
(ii) stimulate the student intellectually through the programme in such a way that they appreciate social problems;
(iii) provide a solid foundation of knowledge about the workings of society and its institutions and develop the skills for the constructive use of such knowledge;
(iv) develop in students the ability to apply the knowledge to the resolution of societal problems and conflicts;
(v) develop in students such skills and competencies that would allow them to be self-reliant and entrepreneurial;
(vi) imbue in the students a deep appreciation of the political dynamics of society and the impact of this on wider socio-economic development and societal well being.
(vii) teach their subjects at the secondary school level;
(viii) teach Government/Political Science, Civic, Citizenship Education and other related subjects at the non-degree teacher training colleges;
(ix) instruct students with the best possible techniques or instructional methodology in the teaching of Government, Civics, Citizenship Education and other related subjects;
(x) inculcate in the students the spirit of inquiry, creativity, and the ability to think critically and effectively in solving personal and/or other problems;
(xi) understand the role of Political Science in general education and in the society; and,
(xii) apply developed skills to enhance school and community relations.
The aims of the course include contributing to the achievement of the goals of the Faculty and equipping undergraduate students with the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes for delivering effective Government, Civic and Citizenship Education lessons in the secondary school.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
General
For admission into any of the first degree programmes of the University, a candidate shall be required to possess the following minimum qualifications:
1. Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) or its equivalents with credit level passes in five (5) subjects at not more than two sittings. The candidate must also earn an acceptable score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
2. Candidates seeking admission by direct entry into the 200 level, must have at least five (5) O/L credits, two of which must be at Advanced Level or approved equivalents.

Departmental Admission Requirement
U.M.E. Candidates
B. Ed. Economics
For admission into the first degree programme in Education Economics, a candidate must have the Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) or its equivalents with credit level passes in five (5) subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Economics to form the core subjects, with credit in two other relevant arts or social science subjects at not more than two sittings. The candidate must also earn an acceptable score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

B. Ed. English
For admission into the first degree programme in Education English, a candidate must have the Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) or its equivalents with credit level passes in five (5) subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Literature in English to form the core subjects, with credit in two other relevant arts or social science subjects at not more than two sittings. The candidate must also earn an acceptable score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

B. Ed. Political Science
For admission into the first degree programme in Education Political Science, a candidate must have the Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) or its equivalents with credit level passes in five (5) subjects: English Language and Mathematics to form the core subjects, with credit in three other relevant arts or social science subjects at not more than two sittings. The candidate must also earn an acceptable score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).


Direct Entry Candidates
B. Ed. Economics
Candidates seeking admission by direct entry into the 200 level Education Economics programme, must have Advanced Level passes in at least two (2) social science subjects one of which must be Economics, in addition to credit level passes in five of the subjects listed in 3.2.1 above at the SSCE or its equivalents. Candidates with NCE and approved equivalents in relevant subjects with at least a lower credit may be considered for direct entry into the programme. Candidates with acceptable pass in the UNIOSUN Foundation Programme are also eligible for admission into the 200 level, provided they possess the requisite qualification for entry into the 100 level of the programme.

B. Ed. English
Candidates seeking admission by direct entry into the 200 level Education English programme, must have Advanced Level passes in at least two (2) arts subjects one of which must be English, in addition to credit level passes in five of the subjects listed in 3.2.1 above at the SSCE or its equivalents. Candidates with NCE and approved equivalents in relevant subjects with at least a lower credit may be considered for direct entry into the programme. Candidates with acceptable pass in the UNIOSUN Foundation Programme are also eligible for admission into the 200 level, provided they possess the requisite qualification for entry into the 100 level of the programme.

B. Ed. Political Science
Candidates seeking admission by direct entry into the 200 level Education Political Science programme, must have Advanced Level passes in at least two (2) social science/arts subjects one of which must be History/Government, in addition to credit level passes in five of the subjects listed in 3.2.1 above at the SSCE or its equivalents. Candidates with NCE and approved equivalents in relevant subjects with at least a lower credit may be considered for direct entry into the programme. Candidates with acceptable pass in the UNIOSUN Foundation Programme are also eligible for admission into the 200 level, provided they possess the requisite qualification for entry into the 100 level of the programme.

Post UTME Screening
All Candidates seeking admission into the University irrespective of their UTME scores shall be required to pass the University post UTME Screening test before being admitted.

Registration Procedure
(a) Students shall normally complete registration at the beginning of the semester.
(b) Any addition or deletion from the courses for which a student is formally registered must be made with the consent of the course coordinator.
(c) A student may be allowed to withdraw from a course by the course administrator before a third of lectures have been given. Such a student who withdraws after this time or who fails to sit for examination without reasons acceptable to the appropriate Faculty/College Board shall be deemed to have failed the course. A Grade point of 0F shall be recorded for the student in the course.
(d) Late registration in the course may be allowed with penalty of up to 4 weeks after the commencement of registration.

Duration of Degree Programmes
The minimum number of years to be spent to be awarded a first degree in a programme of study in non-professional area in the university shall be four years (or three years minimum for direct entry candidates). Registration shall not exceed an additional 50% of the duration of the programme if the student fails to graduate within the minimum number of years.

Graduation Requirements
To qualify for the award of a degree of the Osun State University, a student is required to have:
(i) completed and passed the prescribed number of units including all compulsory courses specified by the University.
(ii) completed and met the standards for all required and optional courses.
(iii) obtained the prescribed minimum CGPA.
