3 Functional Laboratories
Fully equipped for teaching and research purposes
Brief History
The Department of Geological Sciences is one of the pioneer Departments in the College of Science, Engineering and Technology of Osun State University, established at the inception of the University in September 2007. The Department currently offers one degree programme, B.Sc. Geology.
There are three functional laboratories in the Department. The laboratories are well equipped for teaching and research. Classrooms and lecture rooms are shared with other Departments in the College.
Students offer similar courses at the 100 level but begin departmental courses from the 200 level. At the 300 level Rain Semester, all students undertake a six-month Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) as part of their graduation requirement.
The programme follows the National Universities Commission (NUC) Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards.
Our Philosophy
The undergraduate programme in Geology is designed to equip students with the ability to apply knowledge and skills to solving theoretical and practical problems in the exploration and exploitation of natural earth resources, and to carry out research in Geo-Sciences.
"Arousing entrepreneurial spirits needed for employment and economic emancipation."
Programme Objectives
- 01 Instill in students a sense of enthusiasm for Geology and its application in solving societal developmental problems.
- 02 Provide students with a broad and balanced foundation of geological knowledge and practical skills.
- 03 Develop the ability to apply geological knowledge to theoretical and practical problems.
- 04 Develop transferable skills valuable in geological and non-geological employment.
- 05 Provide a strong base for further specialization in geology or multidisciplinary areas.
- 06 Generate appreciation of geology’s role in industrial, economic, environmental and social development.
