Brief History

The Department of Arts and Social Science Education was one of the pioneer departments in the College of Education, Osun State University. Established on September 21, 2007 at the inception of the University, the department offers three highly sought-after degree programmes: B.Ed. Economics, B.Ed. English, and B.Ed. Political Science.

The department commenced operations with six dedicated academic staff who are specialists in Arts and Social Science Education. These are supported by adjunct and visiting lecturers from other relevant departments within the University and partner institutions. The department also has a Departmental Secretary and an Office Assistant.

Students in the department offer general Education courses at the 100 level and begin their core discipline courses from the 200 level. At the 400 level, all students return to the College to complete their Education courses. All programmes are fully aligned with the National Universities Commission (NUC) Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards.

B.Ed. Economics Education

Philosophy

The B.Sc. (Ed) Economics programme aims to produce high-quality, committed professionals in Economics Education to meet national needs, particularly at the secondary school level. The programme provides prospective teachers with a solid foundation in Economics.

Objectives

  • Equip students with analytical tools to solve economic problems using deductive and inductive reasoning.
  • Provide training in the principles of economics and their practical application.
  • Develop transferable skills for employment and self-employment.
  • Prepare graduates to teach Economics effectively in secondary schools.
  • Acquaint students with research techniques in Education.

B.Ed. English Education

Philosophy

The B.A. (Ed) English programme is designed to produce competent professionals capable of teaching English Language and Literature effectively at the secondary school level with strong background in language, literature, and pedagogy.

Objectives

  • Develop proficiency in oral and written English for effective communication.
  • Expose students to various genres of literature (Prose, Poetry, and Drama).
  • Prepare graduates for teaching Language and Literature in the Nigerian school system.

B.Ed. Political Science Education

Philosophy

The B.Sc. (Ed) Political Science programme seeks to produce graduates who can effectively teach Government, Political Science, Civic and Citizenship Education while contributing meaningfully to national development.

Objectives

  • Provide training in the principles of Political Science and classroom application.
  • Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills for societal issues.
  • Prepare graduates to teach Government, Civic Education and related subjects effectively.
  • Foster self-reliance, entrepreneurship and appreciation of political dynamics.

Admission Requirements

General Admission Requirements

Candidates must possess five (5) credit passes at Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) or its equivalent in not more than two sittings, including English Language and Mathematics, and must obtain an acceptable score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). All candidates are required to pass the University Post-UTME Screening.

B.Ed. Economics

Five (5) O'Level credits including English Language, Mathematics and Economics plus two other relevant Arts or Social Science subjects.

B.Ed. English

Five (5) O'Level credits including English Language, Mathematics and Literature in English plus two other relevant Arts or Social Science subjects.

B.Ed. Political Science

Five (5) O'Level credits including English Language, Mathematics and any three relevant Arts or Social Science subjects.

Direct Entry Admission

Candidates must have five (5) O'Level credits plus at least two A'Level passes in relevant subjects (one of which must be in the core subject area). Candidates with NCE (Lower Credit and above) or acceptable UNIOSUN Foundation Programme results may also be considered for 200 level admission.
