At the College of Health Sciences, Osogbo Main Campus, we offer a wide range of academic and clinical training programmes designed to prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals who will transform healthcare delivery in Nigeria and beyond.

The College of Health Sciences was established in 2007 as one of the foundational Colleges of Osun State University, the 80th University in Nigeria. The College took off at the inception of academic activities in the University during the 2007/2008 academic session with its first set of students at the Osogbo Main Campus. On our campus, you will find functional, well-equipped laboratories, lecture theatres, and clinical simulation facilities devoted to enhancing our students' studies and practical training.

The College took off with the pioneer Provost as the only academic staff, but by the second year, it had two Professors and eight Lecturers. The College now has four Professors, two Associate Professors, eight Senior Lecturers, other Lecturers and Assistant Lecturers, supported by Technologists, Faculty Officers, and Laboratory staff. Presently, there are three Faculties in the College with sixteen departments offering undergraduate programmes including B.Sc Anatomy, B.Sc Physiology, B.Sc Public Health, BNSc Nursing Science, and the MBBS degree which has been restored following the donation of a dedicated teaching hospital by the Chancellor.

All programmes in the College are fully accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), with curricula tailored to their Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards and medical education requirements.

Location

The College of Health Sciences is situated at the Osogbo Main Campus of Osun State University, Osun State, Nigeria. The campus is centrally located in Osogbo, the state capital, providing students with access to urban healthcare facilities while maintaining a conducive academic environment.

Brief History

2006 Osun State University included the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and other health sciences programmes in the academic brief submitted to the National Universities Commission (NUC) at the point of seeking approval for commencement of academic activities. The College of Health Sciences was envisioned as a flagship College that would address the healthcare manpower needs of Osun State and Nigeria.

2007 The University received its licence to operate as Nigeria's 80th University, and the College of Health Sciences was formally established. The College admitted its pioneer students during the 2007/2008 academic session at the Osogbo Main Campus, with the pioneer Provost as the only academic staff member.

2008-2011 The College experienced rapid growth in academic staff and student enrollment. By the second year, it had two Professors and eight Lecturers. Basic medical sciences programmes including Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry were fully established with functional laboratories.

2012 Due to the absence of a dedicated teaching hospital, the MBBS programme was temporarily suspended. However, the University intensified efforts to secure a teaching hospital facility while continuing to develop other health sciences programmes including Nursing Science and Public Health.

2023 A major breakthrough occurred when the Chancellor of the University generously donated a dedicated teaching hospital. This transformative gesture paved the way for the restoration of the MBBS programme and significantly enhanced clinical training capabilities.

Present Today, the College boasts three Faculties and sixteen academic departments, with over 30 academic staff including Professors, Associate Professors, and Senior Lecturers. The MBBS programme has been fully restored, and students now have access to clinical rotations at the donated teaching hospital. The College continues to expand its programmes, research output, and community health engagement.

The College has designed its programmes to ensure that graduates have excellent theoretical knowledge combined with practical clinical skills, ethical reasoning, and a commitment to community service. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on training, research, and interprofessional collaboration, preparing students to become leaders in healthcare delivery, research, and health policy.
