FROM THE VC'S DESK

Great Universities strive to change the world for the better, they train for future jobs, they are productive and not just consumptive. The challenge before us is to open up to new ideas, get out of our self imposed cocoons and constructively engage the rest of the world‎. That is wisdom.

Labode POPOOLA

UNIOSUN EMPOWERS 16 ALUMNI WITH FUNDS TO START-UP BUSINESSES

In complementing the government efforts in reducing the unemployment rate in the country, the management of Osun State University under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Labode Popoola has on Friday, 20th of November disbursed funds for its Alumni with bankable proposals and trained them on how to become successful entrepreneurs and employer of labours under the University’s start-up fund scheme.

The Chairman of the start-up fund committee, Professor Dayo Akintayo, while giving his remarks on the scheme said we started with the publication of an advertisement in the national dailies that any Alumnus or alumna of the University that has a bankable proposal should submit his or her business proposal to the Advancement office for the start-up fund scheme’s committee’s review and consideration. After rigorous screening, the committee picked sixteen Alumni that have good bankable proposals and presented them to the Vice-Chancellor for approval.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Labode Popoola while addressing the beneficiaries advised them to be focused and determined to succeed.
“Our vision in this University is to provide a high-quality teaching and learning experience that will engender the production of entrepreneurial graduates capable of impacting their environment while being globally competitive and that is why we train every student of this University on innovation, technology and entrepreneurial driven ideas so as to be self-reliant after graduation.”

“As a student-friendly University, we follow up with our graduands and one of the results of our follow-up gave birth to the creation of this start-up fund scheme for the Alumni. This means that we are not only graduating our students but we are also working with them to achieve their dreams by supporting the ones that want to go into entrepreneurship but are having financial setbacks with funds and training to stand on their feet.”

“This fund that we are giving you today may appear small, but it is a mustard seed. It can, and should shape your future for the better. Finally, I like to implore our alumni who are yet to take advantage of this opportunity to act fast and be part of this big dream,” Professor Popoola added.

The Chief Whip of Osun State House of Assembly, Honourable Olatunde Olatunji who was one of the guest lecturers at the event advised the alumni to be ready to face challenges and be determined not to quit.
Also, the Special Adviser to Osun State Governor on Osun Investment and Promotion Agency (OSIPA) lent his voice to that of the Chief Whip by detailing his lecture to educate the beneficiaries on the importance of packaging their businesses with a befitting branding so as to make profit.
